[Effect of added and residual elemental sulfur to calcareous soils on watermelon, faba bean and some soil chemical properties [effect on pH, accumulation of salt on soil surface and nodule formation]]

Three rates of S (0, 1000 and 3000 kg/ha) with and without 80 kg P2O5/ha were used. Watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) followed by faba bean (Vicia faba) were the test crops. The results obtained indicated that the amount of SO4 S extracted from the soil, which reflects the amount of S that oxidized caused significant reduction in soil pH. The reduction increased with increasing rate of S applicati2048on with more pH reduction in the soil close to the plants roots. Available P has significantly increased and was correlated with the amount of SO4 S extracted. The effect of the highest rate of S on available P was not statistically different from the effect of addition of 80 kg P2O5/ha. The combination of 1000 kg S/ha and 80 kg P2O5/ha gave the highest watermelon yield. The faba bean yield was reduced as a result of residual amount of S and this reduction was found to be related to the accumulation of salt on the soil surface resulted from possible gypsum formation.
