shThe paper deals with effects of three factors on number and biomass of organisms and on the rate of mineralization processes, i.e. soil moisture content, the length of the period since fens were drained and the origin of peat. An attempt was made to prove the hypothesis that the community tended to stabilize with time, in all the places where soil had not been overdried. This is shown by changes in trophic structure of body sizes, and of the community complexity. The origin of peat, i.e. specific properties of the plant association which had constituted the surface layer of the deposit, determined several specific features of soil and, consequently, of communi
