Medicinal plants for livestock and poultry in Ilocos Norte [Philippines]

There were 72 plants species identified that had medicinal values to animals. The most commonly used were balayang (Musa erans L.), makabuhay (Tinospora rumphil boerl.), madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium Jacq.) and dangla (Vitex negundo L.). Other medicinal plants used by farmers although of lesser frequency were tawiwa-tawwa (Jatropha multifida L.), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), betel nut (Areca catechu L.), baraniw (Ocimum basilicum L.), coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilzeck). Plant parts commonly used were the root, stem, bark, blossoms, leaves, suckers and shoots. The methods of preparation were decoction, pulverization, drying, extraction, heating/roasting or as fresh plant parts. These preparations were usually used singly or in combination with either water, urine, vinegar, oil, corn, grass and kerosene. The solutions or combinations were administered by oral, topical or local routes, while others were applied directly on the nests of chicken. The respondents further1494 claimed that their frequency of administering medicinal plants ranged from 1 to 3 times a day for as many days as needed, until healing occur
