Argono, R.S. | Lindsay, D.R. (Balai Penelitian Ternak, Research Institute for Animal Production, Bogor (Indonesia))
Semen was collected by artificial vagina from Pekin drakes, aged 31 and 34 weeks, at frequencies of once, twice, three times and six times per week over a 24 week period. The average semen volume and sperm number per ejaculate decreased significantly as the frequency of semen collection was increased. However, the total semen volume and total number of sperm per week per bird increased significantly as the frequency of semen collection was increased. The sperm concentration was not influenced by the frequency of semen collection. The frequency of semen collection had no effect on the duration of fertility as measured by number of days of fertile eggs after the second day of insemination. Daily semen collection over an extended period was not harmful to the drake.
