A total of 420 one-week-old, mixed sex, Arbor Acres broiler chicks were included in a trial aiming to determine the optimum protein level in corn-soybean-fish meal diets. Experimental units of 35 chicks were randomly to 12 pens. Two replicate pens were fed each of the six diets containing different protein levels, a two-stage system (starters, 1-4 and finishers, 4-8 weeks of age) were studied. Diets within treatment were isocaloric (ME, 2900 kcal/kg in both starters and finishers) but differed in levels of protein (Starters 21, 21, 21, 21, 20, 20 then changing to finishers; 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 18). The results indicated that a protein level of 20 percent for starter1167s and then changing to 17 percent for finishers might be recommended for optimum biological response, carcass quality and monetary returns, providing that these diets were supplemented with methionine plus cystine to meet the NRC's (1977) recommendat
