Soil and water losses from the terraced reforestation at Angkhang highland, Chiang Mai [in Thailand]

The results revealed that the average soil and water losses from those five experimental plots recorded in 1983 were 0.20 ton per hectare and 17.09 millimeter, respectively with highly statistical significance. In 1984, the average soil and water losses from the same plots were 0.095 ton per hectare and 13.53 millimeter, respectively with no statistical significance. However, there were high statistical significance between the former five plots and the latter two plots. The comparison between the average amount of soil and water losses from the controlled plots and five treated plots revealed that the efficiency of the terraced reforestation could greatly reduce amount of soil and water losses. The average amounts of soil losses from the non-terraced reforestation and conventional fallow plots were found to be 70 and 7,000 times higher than those from the terraced reforestation plots. In a sim0954ilar manner, the amount of water losses were found to be 5.5 and 15 times, respectively. Besides, the average erodibility factor (k) generated from rainfall factor (EI-30) by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was 0.042 leading to "low to very low" soil-loss property.
