[The mechanization of lentil harvesting in Syria]

Lentils are an important crop in the arid zones in the Near East. The harvesting of lentils, which is done exclusively by hand in these regions, has to be completed within a very short period of time. Due to rising labour costs for this absolute work peak, lentil growing is becoming increasingly unprofitable. Mechanization of the harvest is thus urgently necessary. As a result of the specific cultivation conditions in this area, the presently used machine harvesting methods for lentils with combine harvesters are ruled out. Alternative methods are being developed at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo/Syria. The article describes these methods. In addition to the harvesting techniques based on mowing, the article deals at some length with the development of a lentil harvester which pulls out the complete plants.
