Herbicide- and insecticide-free crop edges: a contribution to an environmentally oriented agriculture

The practice of nature conservation which is predominant nowadays aims to conserve species and special biotopes. The concept excludes man and his activities. Nature and man are seen as opposites. Furthermore the idea of nature conservency should cove all human activities, in order to take into account both social and ecological needs. This demand can only be realized step by step. This article deals with the programme of crop edges which was initiated in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985. This involves no spraying of herbicides and no or a low input of fertilizers in 3-5 meters of crop edge. Whilst the programme originally concentrated on the protection of weeds, nowadays it includes insects and other animals as well as beneficial organisms as part of biological pest control. The protection of crop edges increases the number of species and the number of individual arthropods and increase the number of flowering plants as well as hosts for parasitic and predatory insects. The programme of protecting crop edges is part of an agricultural concept, which favours ecology and links economy with nature conservation
