Remote sensing and the ecology of vegetational changes in the Fohood area, Iraq

Aerial photographs of Fohood, a typical wetland locality in the Marsh region of southern Iraq, were used in conjunction with the ground survey to illustrate the ecological changes which has taken place during a 12 years period. The investigated area which covered 16 km** (2) revealed many changes: disappearance of certain aquatic species due to cutting and burning e.g. Phragmites australis, an increase and spread of halophytic plants such as Suaeda vermiculata, Tamarix passerinoides and Cressa cretica, also the emergence of new lands partly due to siltation and by man's action. Four vegetation types were recognized: vegetation of the river levees, of depressions, of delta plains and of the open water. Various ecological factors, such as water regime, relief, salinity level are also discussed. The floristic composition of the lacustrine and the saline terrains may be classed under "Aeluropus cressaetum cretica association" with five sub-associations
