Effect of intercropping plantation of some host plants with tomato on population density of tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.), and the incidence of tomato yellow leaf curf virus (Tylcv) in plastic houses

It was found that the population density of developmental stages was significantly lower on tomato planted with pepper or cucumber compared with that recorded on tomato seedlings planted alone in both nursery years. Adults density was significantly higher on tomato transplanted with eggplant and Okra than on those grown with the two previous crops, during 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons, respectively. Adults preferred egg laying on eggplant than on tomato seedling "one month age" under plastic houses or laboratory conditions. The incidence of TYLCV was reduced in about 10 and 26% on tomato planted with pepper during the first three months and the second month after transplanting in the two seasons, respectively. Significant reduction in the disease incidence was found between tomato growing alone and that with cucumber during the different months of the two seasons. It is suggested that either cucumber or pepper are economically feasible crops when intercropped with tomato for trapping whiteflies, delaying virus infestation, and subsequently increasing tomato yield to about 30%
