In a one-year experiment four plant extracts from Mahonia aquifolium, Berberis vulgaris, Rhus typhina and Allium sativum were tested on their effect on fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) under field conditions. Prophylactic spraying was carried out against blossom blight on the highly susceptible ornamental shrubs Cotoneaster salicifolius floccosus. Moreover, streptomycin (100 ppm) and copperoxychloride (0.1 per cent) were used for comparison. All plant extracts showed a significant control up to 53.2 per cent, but were usually less efficient than the bactericides. From two plant extracts a possible resistance induction effect is discussed
