Germination and development of Galium aparine in winter wheat and experience with different herbicide applications

On a humid location near Munich with heavy infestation of Galium aparine results were obtained about the germination and development of cleavers in winter wheat within a four-year period from 1985 till 1988. Germination occured until mid June, mainly in spring until mid April. Afterwards 10-23 per cent of the population still were germinating. Dry periods in 1988 (only 10 per cent) and wet conditions in 1987 (23 per cent) were responsible for the margins. The late germinating plants reached a height of 60-122 cm when growing from mid April and 56-82 cm when growing from mid Mai. The plants were vigorous and produced rather a high rate of viable seeds. Although these plants did not grow bigger than the wheat and affect the yield, disturbance of combining and a higher corn humidity is possible in case of lodging. In wheat fields with a high density, late germinating cleavers are suppressed but later control of cleavers has to be provided when the stand of wheat is less dense. Concerining crop safety and reliability of efficient weed control, Starane 180 (Fluoroxypyr) is to be preferred for late application after wheat stage 29/30 due to the last years experience
