The epigaeic fauna of asparagus fields in southern Hessen (Federal Republic of Germany) was investigated by means of pitfall traps. Two fields were studied in relation to their cultivation, i.e. fertilizing, weed control, harvesting period and tillage. In both fields a high species diversity and abundance has been found. The dominant species was Trichoscelis obscurella (Fall.) (Dipt.: Trichoscelidae). The marked differences in the fauna of ground beetles (Col.: Carabidae) of the two fields correlated with the cultivation methods. These led to a shift in the spectrum of species but not to a decrease in the number of species
