Growth of timothy and red clover in relation to weather and time of autumn cutting, 2: Storage carbohydrates in autumn and spring

Pure stands of timothy and red clover were cut at different times between mid or late August to early October in a two-harvest system, and sampled in autumn and spring (1982/83-83/84) for analyses of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC), including glucose, fructose, sucrose, fructan (timothy) and starch (red clover). Field experiments were carried out at Uppsala in central Sweden and at Umeaa in the north. In timothy, cutting time significantly influenced the concentration of fructan (% DM) in young shoots in the autumn and the subsequent spring. In red clover, no significant effects were observed. During winter the amount of TNC (measured per unit area) in timothy was reduced by about 55 % in the young shoots and 75 % in the old stem bases. In the red clover, the amount of TNC increased by about 35 % in the shoots and decreased by about 75 % in the roots. In timothy, significant correlations were found between the autumn content of TNC and the initial relative growth rate (Rs) of the subsequent spring growth. In the red clover, significant correlation was found between the autumn concentration of TNC in roots and the Rs.
