The trend of pesticide usage in agriculture. Numbers of applications and quantities of pesticides used in 1977-1979 and 1987

The investigations were based on surveys of pesticide usage in agriculture carried out by the Biologische Bundesanstalt (BBA) in 1977-79 and later in 1987. During this time, there had been an increase in the number of applications from 2 to 3.5 and in the quantity of pesticides used (formulations) from 4.8 to 6.3 kg per ha and year for all crops on an average. From the group of pesticides, mainly the fungicides contribute to this increase, and as regards the crops, mainly winter wheat, winter barley and potatoes are involved. As a result of the large increase in the number of applications, the quantity of pesticides used per treatment had declined from 2.4 kg/ha in 1977-79 by 25 per cent to 1.8 kg/ha in 1987. This proves that pesticides had been used with increasing care
