Management problems in tropical estuaries

The present project seeks to study the Segara Anakan, and examine the process favouring this rapid encroachment by particular mangrove species, and the dynamics of development and persistence of tidal creeks and deeper channels. If siltation rates are maintained, the lagoon will be replaced by mangrove swamps threaded by residual networks of deeper tidal channels. The rate at which this happens depends largely on the frequency of flooding and the rate of sediment yield from the Citanduy River, both of which could be reduced by soil and water conservation works in its catchment. Reclamation of the landward parts of the mangrove swamp for rice cultivation may be implemented, especially where transverse seepage is channelled into artificial drains, emptying into the estuary at points that become tidal channel heads.
