[Curt worm Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) damage to corn in Northern Tamaulipas]

The capacity of corn plants at different stages of development to sprout and recover after being damaged by natural infestations of the cut worm Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) was studied in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, during the period from 1981 to 1984. It was observed that the more advanced the crop development stage, the less the plants were able to recover from the damage suffered. The average yield losses per plant were 46, 65, 73 and 74 percent, respectively, when the insect attack occurred at the one, two, three and four leaf stages. Furthermore, inspection of five municipalities in Northern Tamaulipas revealed that the greatest incidence of attack by A. ipsilon occurred at the one-leaf stage ( 11 to 15 days after planting). In 1983 and 1984 there were yield losses of 3.9 and 0.8 percent, respectively, due to attack by this insect. The loss on the most heavily infested land was estimated at 9.5 percent.
