Some aspects of the ecology of Diospyros celebica Bakh. in Sausu and adjacent area, Central Sulawesi (Indonesia)
1989
Sidiyasa, K.
A study on some aspects of the ecology of Diospyros celebica Bakh. was conducted at Sausu and adjacent area, Central Sulawesi in July 1987. The area is located some 60 km South East of Parigi and 60 km West of Poso. The climate is C type in Parigi, which has Q value of 36.7 and annual rainfall of 1.709 mm and A type in Poso which is Q value of 7.3 and annual rainfall of 2,392 mm(Schmidt and Ferguson, 1951). Based on those data and the presence of Garuga floribunda and Kleinhovia hospita (locally common) the area might have slightly seasonal climatic type. Analysis of the topsoil samples showed that textures of the soil varied from sandy loam to clay loam. The chemical properties especially indicated by low content of available phosphor (between 1.90 and 11.50 ppm) and acidity varied of 5.4 to 6.6. Number of tree species (stem diameter of 10cm) on 0.4 ha sample plot (divided on 10 separated sub-plots) recorded of 68 species with density of 770 trees/ha and basal area of 50.15 m2/ha. Canopy stratification reveal that the forest contains of a highest stratum (stratum A) between of 30m and 40 m high, and some emergent trees can be 50 m tall. Compared with Diospyros celebica forest at Wotu, South Sulawesi, as well as towards of soil properties or forest structure and floristic composition reveal are different. Generally, soil properties on D.celebica forest at Sausu and the adjacent area is better. Differences of them might be related to differences in climate, topography and altitudes or other habitat factors.
