Fading elk syndrome is the term given to a chronic ill thrift condition in Wapiti cross animals. It is estimated that more than 10% of all deaths of Wapiti and hybrids in New Zealand are attributable to the syndrome. No causative factors have ever been defined effectively and current concensus is that the syndrome results from a long-standing dietary imbalance. Dietary fibre levels appear the crucial factor. Some basic management changes can drastically reduce the risk and these are outlined in the article
