Pt.2. South Island high country : trends in ground cover and species composition in pastoral tussock grasslands
1989
Hunter, G.G. | Whitehouse, I.E.
Data on the ground cover trends was collected on 4 sets of regularly surveyed transects and plots in the tussock grasslands of Canterbury mountain lands, New Zealand. Results consistently demonstrate slow or negligible rates of overall change in ground cover in recent decades in the mid to high altitude tussock grasslands. However, the apparent stability in the cover does comprise periods and places of declining cover and increasing cover. The ongoing degradation of poorly vegetated areas which are often at high altitude, and where revegetation prospects are poor, may be of particular importance for grassland management. No clear relationships between grazing and vegetation trends were established
