The changes in variability of plants and shoots in the wheat stand

Left-sided skewed distribution (skewness 0) of plant weight was confirmed in the stand sown by drill machine being in accordance with present knowledge. Its pattern exhibited no changes during the growing season. But the pattern of shoot weight frequency distribution changed from strongly left-sided skewed one in tillering across the double-top distribution in the period of stem elongation and heading to the near normal distribution in the end of stand organization (anthesis). This was a result of the great amount of accidental effects that occurred in the stand during the stem formation and the more particular determination of stem growth and development in comparison with plants. A double-top pattern of distribution enables us to divide the shoots into fertile (able to produce spikes) and infertile, practically from the onset of stem elongation and thus to forecast the stand productivity. The conversion of shoots from vegetative to generative development was conditioned by certain minimum weights amounting to 2 g in the Vala variety of winter wheat. The size of shoots was dependent not only on their sequence on plants but also on microconditions of different plants in the stand.
