Effects of different site-parameters on colonization of habitat islands by carabid beetles

The carabid beetle fauna of 23 woodlands of different size and 2 hedges, as representatives of habitat islands in a cultivated landscape, was investigated by means of pitfall trapping. The influence of various site-parameters, like size of area, age and isolation of habitat islands, on colonization of forests by carabid beetles was analysed. Especially, the distribution of the woodland species among carabid beetles, as a typical element of the fauna of those sites, is informative. Apparently, the variation between sites mainly depends on ecological differences. In addition, a high number of woodland species is determined by the age of the woods, while size, resp. isolation are of less importance for colonization by these species. By increasing area size, the total number of species shows a decreasing tendency, while the number and dominance of woodland species increases. An edge-effect is manifested by the open-country-species' invading into the edge
