The influence of shading on changes of redox potentials (RP) of leaves and the relationship between these changes and subsequent attack by Septoria nodorum were studied. The reduction of light intensity significantly increased RP values. The most susceptible response was observed in the ontogenetically oldest flag leaves, mainly in the variety Viginta, where it was more pronounced than in Branka. There was found a highly significant relationship between RP increase and Septoria nodorum development for both varieties. RP values about -100 mV are unfavourable for the pathogen's development; higher attack was accompanied with RP in a range of -40 to -60mV. The comparison of varieties mentioned above with the highly susceptible variety Caldwell (USA) and resistant line H 81 SO8 b 18 (France) showed that minimum yield reduction of the resistant genotype, caused by Septoria nodorum attack, was accompanied with an insignificant increase of RP. The possibility of further utilization of this method is discussed.
