Applying and improving an economic threshold model for weed control in winter oil seed rape

An economic threshold model for cost effective weed control in oilseed winter rape was applied and improved in two years field trials. Data of 42 regional trials in the area of Goettingen and 15 nationwide trials were used for the evaluations. The model overestimated yield losses, therefore the competitive index of some weed species is corrected. Galium aparine is included into the model since it has an effect on grain moisture and thus influences drying costs. The crop competition as an important factor in the economic threshold model was so far insufficiently considered. Therefore the relative leaf area of weeds in late autumn is included as an additional decision criteria for weed control. A concept for cost effective weed control is thus being presented allowing reliable decisions for herbicide application, if required
