Pesticides in rainwater

Precipitation sampled at two sites in Baden-Wuerttemberg was analyzed for pesticides. Five herbicides (atrazine, dichlorprop, mecoprop, simazine and terbuthylazine) and two insecticides (lindane and etrimfos) were detected. With the exception of lindane, which was present in rainwater during the whole year, all substances were detectable only between March and July. In spring, concentrations increased sharply, reached maximum levels in May and June and decreased slowly. In most instances the concentrations observed were in the range of 0.1 mug/l and only in a few cases 1 mug/l were exceeded. High pesticide levels were observed only when precipitation was low, while low pesticide concentrations were related with high precipitations. The pesticide contamination of rain was highest at the beginning and decreased during the rainfall event. Based on total deposition, atrazine and dichlorprop were of greatest importance. The yearly deposition of all detected pesticides together ranged between 0.5 and 3 g/ha. The separate analysis of wet and bulk deposition showed that dry deposition is only of minor importance
