The effect of sugars released by enzymolysis on the fermentation of low dry matter grass

This experiment has confirmed that the addition of pentoses to grass at ensilage results in a higher residual WSC in the silage. This was less pronounced with glucose. It is important that these residual sugars could be identified since others found beneficial effects in the rumen when grass silage was supplemented with pentoses. Addition to glucose and/or an inoculant resulted in increased ethanol content due to the higher number of yeasts. The increase in ethanol did not occur with added pentoses, suggesting that the strain of yeast was not as active in fermenting these sugars. The commercial enzyme supplement was effective in breaking down cellulose and it aided fermentation.
