Synergistic effect of inoculation with Lactobacillus casei and addition of enzyme

To make high quality silage using low dry matter forages, it is necessary to stimulate lactic acid fermentation. This requires the presence of both lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and a source of available carbohydrate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of added LAB, glucose or an enzyme containing cellulase, and glucose oxidase to enhance this process. Timothy (27 % DM, 8,2 % WSC and 63,4 % NDF) and alfalfa (21 % DM, 8,6 % WSC and 46,8 % NDF) forages were ensiled in laboratory silos. Three levels of glucose (0,05 and 1 %) or four levels of enzyme (0,0.005,0.01 and 0,02 %) were added to each forage type. One set of forages were ensiled with no LAB addition. A second set ensiled with an inoculation of Lactobacillus casei (10(6) CFU/g of fo rage). The addition of either glucose, LAB or enzyme lowered the pH in the silages, while their lactic acid content increased. Furthermore, a combination of inoculation and the addition of either glucose or enzyme resulted in remarkable silage quality improvements because of their synergistic effects.
