The use of forage wagons for wilted silage production from grasses with high crude fibre and dry matter contents

Under the conditions of practical farming, the qualities of silages produced by self-loading forage wagon have a great variation. On the average, their nutritive value is lower than of silages produced by precision chop harvesters. The reasons are the longer particle sizes and the lack of an intensive mixing of the picked-up crop material. Particularly in case of high crude fibre (CF) contents of the material and to be ensiled low qualities are reported. An increasing risk had to be expected, when a high CF-content is combined with a high content of dry matter (DM). In the large agricultural enterprises of the eastern part of Germany, high CF contents are frequently found due to management problems and weather conditions. In general, under extensive management systems grasses can also have higher CF-contents at harvest. It was the aim of the work to analyze the influence of the CF-content and DM-content on the initial and final density and the quality silages produced by forage wagons with cutting devices (FW) in comparison to precision chop harvesters (PCH) under farm conditions.
