Two experiments were conducted at the Lunyangwa Agricultural Research Station to study the effect of feeding rice straw based diets on the performance of growing heifers and lactating dairy cows. It is concluded that rice straw untreated or treated with a 4% urea solution could be used effectively as a basal diet to substain live weight gain of growing animals and sustantially reduce the rate of decline in milk yield during the dry season, through adequate supplementation of deficient nutrients
