Herbexpert, the computer-based advisory program of Hoechst AG for the recommendation of herbicides in cereals tested in 1989, was brought into practical operation in spring 1991. In the old countries of the Federal Republic of Germany 671 sets of advice were given during spring 1991 with the advisory system Herbexpert at the five agricultural branch offices of Hoechst AG. At a rate of 86 % of the advisory requests Herbexpert gave concrete herbicide recommendations. In the remaining cases, except where the threshold of the weeds was not achieved, personal special advice was given. Regional evaluations of the advice given by Herbexpert gave information about the importance of individual weeds in different regions of Germany. In spring 1991 some official plant protection services, universities, trading companies etc. were, on request, equipped with Herbexpert and asked for an evaluation of this advisory program
