A survey of physical characteristics and reproductive performance of the Malawi indigenous goats was conducted for a period of two years under extensive system in some villages in Lilongwe. It was found that black was the dominant coat colour, horns and beards were common to both sexes and few goats had wattles. When a full set of permanent incisors erupted, the Malawi goat weighed about 30 kg and was 55 cm high at the withers. It was further found that reproductive performance was highly influenced by the management system. The reasons for this are discussed.
