Development of biological control of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis using Trichogramma evanescens Westwood

The effect of releasing Trichogramma evanescens at a distance of 7 m x 7 m and 13 m x 13 m did not significantly vary, although higher parasitism at 7 m x 7 m was noted. This showed that parasites should be released at close distance when eggs of corn borer were numerous. In all locations, plants with Trichogramma had consistently fewer number of exit holes, larvae, and pupae and had higher yields compared with control plants. Positive results were obtained on the recovery of T. evanescens from the five locations were previous releases were done. This implied that T. evanescens was able to establish in areas where it was released and to suppress corn borer population. Based on percent parasitism of egg masses, parasite population was low at the early stages of the crop and gradually increased as the crop became mature. Parasitism was also high during the cropping season of Nov to Feb. These data indicated that inundative releases should be done during the early stages of plant growth especially when population based on parasitism was low.
