Metosulam - a new herbicide for control of broad-leaved weeds in cereals and maize

Metosulam (code name DE-511) is a representative of a new generation of herbicide chemistry, the triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilides for selective control of broad-leaved weeds in cereals and maize. Extensive trials experiences proved good crop safety for DE-511 in all winter cereal species and the important varieties of maize. Based on present knowledge the optimum time of application in winter cereals in post-emergence in the spring. In view of its flat dose response curves seen for the key cereal broad-leaved weeds, the optimal application rate is 10 gai/ha. This rate presents no safety problems in major rotational crops such as oil seed rape and sugar beet. The weed spectrum of metosulam in maize, applied either pre- or early post-emergence (to the 4 true leaf stage of the weeds) includes all key broad-leaved weeds. Addition of non-ionic adjuvants to the spray solution in the early post-emergence applications in maize increases in the herbicidal efficacy.
