Soil loss and run off from downstream gardens in Matalau village, East New Britain Province

Demonstration plots were set up on steep hillsides to investigate run off and loss of soil. One plot was clean weeded and the other used soil conservation methods with logs across the slope and plant debris on the surface. Over a 16 month period there was much more soil loss on the plot without logs.
