The Impact of the exchange rate on meat imports (Where's the Beef?)
1993
Gibson, J.
Analysis of the effect of the exchange rate on meat imports. Exchange rate policy is often criticized for its adverse effects on agriculture. It is important to study an import-competing industry because some critics claim that the exchange rate acts as an alternative "cheap food" policy undermining local food producers. A major finding of the paper is that the exchange rate is not the prime cause of rising meat imports. Much of the recent growth in meat imports occured during a time of real exchange rate depreciation, which should have improved the competitiveness of local meat producers
