The rise and fall of taungya: lessons from Kenya

The article describes the taungya systems and its introduction to Kenya. This systems in which farmers are allowed to grow food crops in the early establishment of forest plantations, is viewed as an economical system of farming as it gives the farmers food while controlling weeds in forest plantations and maintaining soil fertility. Its collapse in Kenya is discussed and the lessons learnt are highlighted.
