Infestation of wood by the larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)

Investigations were carried out on the capability of Prostephanus truncatus to live or breed in wood, using 27 different wood species, originating from Togo, Benin, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Germany. In 25 wood species breeding could not be detected. However, adults boring into wood resulted in a considerable extension of their lifetime, going up to four month. In wood from Manihot esculenta and Poincinia regia, P. truncatus was able to breed. The possibility for breeding obviously depends on a high starch content. Thus P. trunctatus is able to survive extended periods within the wooden building material of a grain store. The breeding capability in some wood species indicates natural habitats of P. truncatus outside of maize stores. Conclusions for the control strategy are discussed
