The effects of elevated CO2 on the growth and physiology of birch (Betula pendula Roth)

anglais. Birch has been grown from seed in ambient and elevated CO2 for two years. Measurements of growth, biomass production, biochemistry and physiology have been carried out. In the first year of growth CO2 enrichment had a positive effect on biomass accumulation. However, this was not carried over into the second year. Both allocation to plant organs and partitioning to carbohydrates were found to change in response to CO2 treatment. Leaf anatomy changed, with the addition of an extra palisade layer in leaves grown in elevated CO2. Chlorophyll and Rubisco content were reduced but photosyntesis was not down regulated. The plants have now been moved to individual tree chambers where measurements will continue for a further two years

italien. Le betulle, ottenute da seme, sono state coltivate, per due anni, in presenza di CO2 atmosferica e ad un'elevata concentrazione di CO2. Sono state effettuate misure di crescita, di biomassa e sono state condotte analisi a livello biochimico e fisiologico. Nel primo anno di crescita, l'arricchimento di CO2 ha avuto un effetto positivo sull'accumulo della biomassa, che pero non e proseguito nel secondo anno. E stato riscontrato che sia la distribuzione agli organi delle piante sia la ripartizione tra i carboidrati variavano in risposta al trattamento con CO2. L'anatomia delle foglie e cambiata, con l'aggiunta di uno strato a palizzata in piu nelle foglie coltivate con un'alta concentrazione di CO2. Il contenuto di clorofilla e di rubisco e diminuito, mentre non e stata registrata una "down-regulation" per la fotosintesi. Le piante sono state attualmente trasferite in camere per esemplari singoli, dove i rilevamenti proseguiranno per altri due anni
