Observation on the longevity and the spread of Heterobasidion annosum in stumps of white fir and norway spruce [Tuscany]

The longevity and spread of Heterobasidion annosum on stumps of Silver fir and Norway spruce was investigated in plot n. 111 of the Forest of Vallombrosa (Firenze), where the fungus had been reported in stumps of these two species since the clearing of 1967. In 1991, 24 years later, H. annosum was still present on the old stumps, 42% of which contained fruiting bodies; cases of infected new generation trees were also noted. All the isolates obtained belonged to intersterility group F. The spread of the fungus via the roots was traced and quantified by means of vegetative compatibility tests on isolates from trees growing in proximity to each other. A total of 30 clones were found in an area of ca. 625 m2. The number of the stumps infected by one clone varied from 1 to 6, and the greatest distance between stumps infected by the same clone was 4.6 m

Si sono prese in considerazione la longevita' e la diffusione di H. annosum nella parcella n. 111 della Foresta di Vallombrosa (Firenze), nella quale la presenza del parassita su ceppaie di abete bianco e Picea era stata registrata fin dal momento del taglio avvenuto nel 1967. A 24 anni dal taglio la presenza di H. annosum sulle vecchie ceppaie e' stata confermata dalla presenza di corpi fruttiferi sul 42% di esse e si sono osservati casi di colonizzazione di piante del nuovo turno. Gli isolati ottenuti sono risultati appartenere tutti al gruppo intersterile F. Attraverso saggi di compatibilita' vegetativa fra isolati ottenuti da piante ospiti vicine fra loro e' stato possibile osservare e quantificare la diffusione del fungo per via radicale, individuando 30 cloni in un' area di circa 625 m2. Il numero di ceppaie infette per clone e' risultato variabile da 1 a 6 e la distanza massima rilevata fra due ceppaie colonizzate dallo stesso clone e' risultata di 4.6 metri
