Comparative performance of late planted sunflower, cowpea and field bean in low and high rainfall areas of Zimbabwe

This study assessed the seed yield and economic performance of late planted sunflower, cowpea and field bean. There was considerable variation in yield of the three crops across environments. Field bean had the largest coefficient of variation (96 per cent) and sunflower the smallest (36 per cent). Cowpea gave the highest average net benefits across environments while field bean out-performed sunflower under high rainfall but was less profitable than the sunflower under low rainfall. Although sunflower was not the most profitable crop across environments, its yield stability and good market opportunities made it the best late planted cash crop
