The paper discusses a particular aspect of small scale mixed farming systems, one which explains why many problems have not been solved by research and development efforts. An aspect which can explain why the enormous potential of small scale farming systems of contributing to sustainable agricultural production and economic growth has not been realized. The author refers to the fact that institutions today are not capable of dealing with problems and potentials in mixed and predominantly non-commercial land use systems
