Maize intercropping systems in Malawi and the requirements of the small farmer
1990
Jones, R.B. (The Rockefeller Foundation, Lilongwe (Malawi))
The paper focuses on the different intercropping systems found in Malawi. Attention has been given to maize-bean, maize-cowpea, maize-pigeonpea and maize-soyabean intercropping systems with investigations being made into the residual effects from intercropping. Maize-bean intercropping was selected because of its importance throughout Malawi with cowpea substituting for beans in the Lake-shore and Shire Valley ecologies where beans are not well adapted. Maize-pigeonpea was considered important because of the potential to lenghten the growing season and exploit residual moisture reserves that would otherwise be lost
