The development of heat in tower silos and its relation to chemical and microbiological parameters of the silage

The temperatures at the upper layers and in the deeper parts of 6 tower silos in which no preservatives had been used were measured when they were first opened and two weeks later. At opening the mean surface temperature was less than 25 deg C, but at a depth of 2.2 m the mean temperature was 34.4 deg C. Two weeks after opening the mean temperature at 0.4 m was 36.8 deg C. The temperature at 2.2 m was still high. The deep level temperature at 2.2 m has not earlier been described. The temperature of the crop was also studied in 4 silos during the 8 days after filling. In silage where no preservatives had been used the mean increase in temperature in the bulk of the crop was up to 10 deg C, and the increase was negatively correlated with the speed of filling. In 2 of the towers parts of the crop had been treated with formic acid, and here the increase in temperature was at most 2 deg C. The temperatures at the upper layers and at depths down to 2.1 m were also measured in 29 towers 1, 4, 7 and 10 weeks after they were opened. The upper layers temperatures followed the temperatures at depth, and dry matter content, and the concentrations of acetic acid of the silage. The temperatures at depth remained high for at least 7 weeks after the towers were opened. There was a significant correlation between the formation of acid detergent fibre-nitrogen and the sum of the temperatures at the upper layers and at depth 7 and 10 weeks after opening.
