Effects of soil moisture stress on the growth of seedlings of three eucalypt species, 3. Tissue-water relations [Eucalyptus sieberi; E. pilularis; E. maculata]

Water stress was found to decrease osmotic potential at full and zero turgor in seedlings of Eucalyptus sieberi, E. pilularis and E. maculata, the effect being greatest in E. maculata and least in E. sieberi. The changes in osmotic potential with stress allowed the seedlings to maintain higher turgor potentials over a range of water potentials, and lowered both the water potential and relative water content at which the tissues reach zero turgor. The bulk modulus of elasticity was unchanged by water stress in E. Pilularis and E. maculata but increased in seedlings of E. sieberi. The different responses to water stress of seedlings of the 3 species are consistent with their abilities to survive severe water stress, and the continued growth of seedlings of E. sieberi under a less severe drought may be due to effects on the cell wall.
