1986
Francis, C.M. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Perth. Plant Production Div.)
Some 760 seed samples of leguminous species were collected at 174 sites in north-west Syria, Turkey, and northern Cyprus. In addition 16 samples of barley from farmer's crops were collected in northern Cyprus and Syria. Trifolium and Medicago were the main genera sought. Major target species T. fragiferum and T. resupinatum were generally collected in damp micro-environments. Subterranean clovers were found at 25 sites and the rare T. yanninicum at 5 sites in the Manisa Region of Turkey. Of the Medicago species, M. truncatula is dominant in northern Cyprus but absent from the cold winter areas of southern Turkey and north-west Syria. Conversely, M. rigidula, commonly found in Syria and Turkey, was extremely rare in Cyprus. M. polymorpha was the most frequent of all species encountered. A brief discussion of the potential and problems of the ley farming system for Cyprus and north-west Syria is included.
