Effects of soil moisture stress on the growth of seedlings of three eucalypt species, 2. Growth effects [Eucalpytus sieberi, E. pilularis; E. maculata]

Seedlings of Eucalyptus sieberi, E. pilularis and E. maculata grown in pots in a glasshouse in each of the three soils on which they occur naturally grew best on the more fertile 'maculata' soil and worst on the least fertile 'pilularis' soil with no evidence of soilxspecies interaction. On 'sieberi' soil, however, E. maculata seedlings grew best and E. sieberi seedlings worst, due probably to the high bulk density of this soil. Seedling growth of E. pilularis and E. maculata was inhibited by low soil water potentials independent of soil type, whereas shoot growth of E. sieberi seedlings was unaffected. The root-shoot ratio of E. sieberi seedlings was also unaffected by low soil water potentials, whilst the ratio increased in the other two species. However, although E. sieberi seedlings responded less than seedlings of the other two species to imposed water stress. E. sieberi seedlings died first and at a higher soil water content when water was withheld completely. The results indicate that E. pilularis and E. maculata seedlings sense drought sooner than E. sieberi seedlings.
