Russell, R.C. (Westmead Hospital, Westmead (Australia). Dept. of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology)
The relative vector competence of 6 species of mosquito were investigated in laboratory trials. All 6 species were able to support complete development of Dirofilaria immitis to the infective stage, with Aedes notoscriptus and Culex annulirostris being quite receptive to infectivity. Ae notoscriptus is the most important vector in domestic situations, where a community effort could dramatically reduce larval habitats.
