One of the difficulties of studying equine herpesvirus-1 pathogenesis and assessing vaccines has been the lack of a convenient small-animal model. Experiments reported here demonstrate that Balb/C mice are susceptible to pneumonia in varying degrees, together with other clinical symptoms, when infected with the virus.
