Evaluation of fungicides to control take-all [Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici] and rhizoctonia root rot [Rhizoctonia solani] of wheat

Hexaconazole, flusilazole, prochloraz and propiconazole were very effective in reducing growth of Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, on agar plates whereas all 7 fungicides tested reduced the growth of R. solani. Similarly, in a pot experiment, only mepronil reduced take-all of wheat, whereas all 7 fungicides reduced the severity of rhizoctonia root rot. Of the fungicides tested in a micro-plot experiment, hexaconazole, prochloraz and propiconazole reduced take-all (flusilazole was also tested) and all 4 reduced rhizoctonia root rot. Prochloraz and hexaconazole increased seed weight in take-all infected plants but none of the fungicides had any effect on yield of plants infected with rhizoctonia root rot. In the absence of either disease, the fungicides had little or no effect on plant growth.
