Insecticidal effect of some plant extracts on the cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae)

The insecticidal activity of acetone extracts of Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf., Momordica charantia L., Zingiber officinale (Ros.), Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich., Ocimum gratissimum L. and Aframomum melegueta (Ros.) K. Schum against the cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch was investigated. Z. officinale and A. melegueta extracts had the greatest effect in causing mortality of A. craccivora and inhibiting its reproduction. Extract from M. charantia caused high nymphal mortality whilst extract from C. citratus also caused significant nymphal mortality, reduction of life span of adult aphids and inhibition of aphid reproduction
